TELEFONZELLE

In Germany, a phone booth is called a Telefonzelle. A small, enclosed space (cell) for the telephone. Originally, a “cell” referred to the private room of a monk or nun in a monastery.

With the rise of smartphones traditional phone booths have become rare. Today, people need power, internet, and privacy.

My phone booth is an artistic reinterpretation with reference to the monastery. It consists of a metal tube frame with an open arch, a glowing Wi-Fi symbol, bright yellow Plexiglas on the sides, and a tile-like patterned back wall like monastery windows.

Unlike in traditional phone booths, the user kneels on a padded kneeling bench, can charge their smartphone, and use Wi-Fi. The posture and design make electricity, internet, and the smartphone appear almost sacred.
